Natural stone has a beauty that’s intricate and unique – down to the very last inch. In collaboration with Matt Johnston from Italian Stone, Mr and Mrs Ward has found a way to celebrate these qualities with slabs of offcut stone that are redefined as platters, trivets, candle holders or even as examples of gorgeousness to simply place on the benchtop and behold.

Using a water-jet, pieces are precision-cut into ovoid or circular forms before the stone is laboriously hand-finished and then polished to highlight the dynamic swirls, streaks and veins of this precious material.

Mr and Mrs Ward stone platters and trivets are available in four versions: Spartacus Travertine from Tivoli with a pattern that, according to Matt, “looks like an earthquake shattered the mountains millions of years ago”; Rosso Levanto, a deep-red, elegant marble from Turkey; popular Pietra Grey from Iran with a classic dark brown to grey background and white veins, and Emitis Onyx – a wildly wonderful green-and-white stone from Northern India.

Collaborating with Italian Stone – a family-run business in West Auckland – was an easy decision for Mr and Mrs Ward. “Matt and I have a great friendship and his knowledge has given me the courage to specify many bold, beautiful pieces over the years. He’s our generation and achieving great things in a demanding market,” says Janice Kumar-Ward.

Including, now, exquisite objects that will be handed down through generations to be treasured forever.

Due to the Trivets being made of stone, we recommend pick up from our studio.
