The not-so-humble tea towel can be an exquisite sample of design that’s affordable to all. “I love a stylish  tea towel. I always keep one or two aside just for serving dinner with or wrapping Jules’ favourite scones in,” says Janice Kumar-Ward.

These tea towels by Mr and Mrs Ward are produced in collaboration with Arcanum Linen and feature two fun prints (fish and jellies) while a third has a contemporary black-and-white stripe. “Julian’s favourite is the fish – it’s a culinary classic – and because I love vintage items, the jelly moulds just appealed to my nostalgic side as they remind me of my grandmother.”

The idea was to create a ‘his-and-hers’ tea towel and team it with a design that was neutral (stripes),” explains Janice. Each hand-screened design is also finished with a beautiful calligraphy signature.

Printed on cotton, the tea towels, which come in a pack of three, are made with individual care and attention by Anne Sherriff of Arcanum Linen: first, Anne manipulates found images and hand-drawn calligraphy to craft her designs then she handprints the items in her workshop studio alongside the Oratia Stream.  “I like the immediacy of screen-printing,” says Anne. “And I’m always striving for perfection.”

In all her products, Anne uses water-based inks that are heat-set so the process is eco-friendly and there’s an equal commitment to creativity and quality. “I’ve really enjoyed collaborating on this project with Janice and Julian. Combining ideas keeps you keen and motivated.”
