A quality chopping board is a forever object that can be both beautiful and utilitarian. Janice Kumar-Ward and Julian Ward treasure their own wooden boards so much that, when friends were getting married, it was the first idea that sprung to mind. “It was our go-to wedding gift. We’d craft them ourselves using wood from furniture-making or renovation projects,” says Janice.

The couple has two wooden boards they love – a smaller one for chopping fresh herbs and a larger one that they’d use as grazing platters when entertaining casually at home. Their children, Stella and Ted, LOVE platter dinners too!

Almost since the start of her interior-design career, Janice had helped clients to renovate villas and bungalows, and she always sourced the recycled native timbers she needed for the restoration of floors, skirting boards or joinery through the Kauri Warehouse.

So the Mr and Mrs Ward boards are made from reclaimed kauri. “We have a strong working relationship with Kauri Warehouse and so it made sense to collaborate with them,” says Janice. “I believe in a small place like New Zealand, you keep your work connections close.”

The circular board (180mm in diameter) is modelled on one Jules always uses to cut lemons for Gins in the Paddock! Janice loves it for herbs since a favourite hobby is cooking for friends and family. The larger rectangular one is big enough to fit over a sink and makes an ideal presentation platter.

The smaller board and the Mr and Mrs Ward paring knife (also one of their 10 favourite things) are natural partners – both timeless objects that have form and function that will last a lifetime.

Dimensions: Small is 180mm in diameter. Large is 600mm x 355mm
